War is Hell 11 is a comic book published by Marvel Comics in 1974. It is notable for featuring the first appearance of the character John Kowalski, also known as the Phantom Eagle. The issue was written by Gary Friedrich, with art by Dick Ayers and Frank Giacoia. The story takes place during World War I and follows Kowalski, an American pilot, as he flies dangerous missions against the German army. Kowalski later dons a costume and becomes the Phantom Eagle.  Phantom Eagle is a superhero who fights for justice in the skies. War is Hell 11 is considered a key issue in Marvel Comics history, as it introduced a new character who would go on to make appearances in other Marvel titles.
