History of GI Joe A Real American Hero Comic Books

The “G.I. Joe” comic book series is based on the popular Hasbro toy line and has been published by several different publishers over the years. The most notable and longest-running series is the Marvel Comics’ “G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero” series, which began in 1982 and lasted until 1994. This series is often referred to as the “Marvel run” or the “classic run.”

Written by Larry Hama, the Marvel “G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero” series became a significant success and played a crucial role in popularizing the G.I. Joe franchise. It featured a mix of military action, espionage, and sci-fi elements. The series focused on the ongoing battle between the G.I. Joe team and the terrorist organization known as Cobra. Larry Hama’s tenure on the series is highly regarded for its characterization, complex storytelling, and attention to military detail.

After the Marvel run ended, other publishers, including Image Comics, Dark Horse Comics, and Devil’s Due Publishing, acquired the license to publish G.I. Joe comics. These subsequent series explored different storylines and continuities, often putting their unique spin on the G.I. Joe universe.

In recent years, IDW Publishing has become the primary publisher for G.I. Joe comics. They launched a new series titled “G.I. Joe” in 2008, which continued the storyline from the Marvel series. IDW has also released various spin-offs, mini-series, and crossover events within the G.I. Joe universe.

The G.I. Joe comics have featured a diverse cast of characters, both from the G.I. Joe team and Cobra. Popular characters such as Duke, Snake Eyes, Scarlett, Storm Shadow, and Cobra Commander have become iconic figures in the franchise.
